RangManch: 9th Multi-Lingual Hindustani Drama Festival

RangManch-Canada in association with Panorama India and the Sawitri Theatre group, proudly presents the 9th HINDUSTANI DRAMA FESTIVAL on Saturday 12th November, 2011 at the Maja Prentice Theatre. This fabulous evening is supported by the Consulate General of India and is part of the celebrations of the Year of India in Canada. The Consul General of India, Ms. Preeti Saran, wilI inaugurate the festival.

Yearof IndiaThe Hindustani Drama Festival is a unique showcase of the vibrant heritage of traditional and contemporary Indian theatre. The festival features one act plays and solo presentations in English, Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Sanskrit. The main purpose of this festival is to bring together the rich theatre traditions of the various languages of India and especially showcase the talent of the new generation in our diverse community.

Ms. Preeti Saran, Consul General of India, will inaugurate the evening.

 The Programme:

3pm – 4:30pm: PaJeewan Saathi Clinicnel Discussion and Seminar on 'The challenges of Indian drama in Canada' and 'The experiences of desi talent in mainstream performing arts and films'.

From 5pm onwards: Plays and solo performances including RangManch-Canada's award winning production Jeewan Saathi Clinic in Urdu. Other fabulous performances lined up are Anarkali (The pomegranate Bud) in English, Magazine Vendor the .award-winning solo in Hindi, Adhi Mitti Adha Sona solo in Punjabi and the SAWITRI Group's
I (K)NO(W) Englis in Gujarati.

Jawaid Danish a former drama artist on All India Radio is the Artistic Director of RangManch-Canada. Danishis a celebrated Urdu playwright, poet and author of 12 books. He is a recipient of several awards,the most recent being the Civic Arts Award (Pickering), Shiromani Sahitya Award (Lucknow) and South Asian Theatre Festival Award (New Jersey). Jawaid`s urdu plays have been translated into English, Hindi, Bengali, Kannada and Swedish. He is an active member of Pen Canada and an Executive of The Poet Foundation.

RangManch-Canada is a not-for-profit organization that has been promoting experimental, multi-lingual Indian theatre by organizing the Hindustani Drama Festival in the GTA every year.

The SAWITRI Theatre Group, is Mississauga based not- for-profit organization who`s mandate is to educate, inform, entertain and heal through the arts, especially theatre. SAWITRI’s Artistic Co-Directors are Jasmine Sawant and Shruti Shah. SAWITRI regularly collaborates with groups such as RangManch and arts organizations to bring unique experiences to its audiences.
