Asha Bhosle, one of India’s most well-known and respected artists, was recently selected by CNN among the top 20 iconic and influential musicians of all time, in the company of Michael Jackson, the Beatles, and Elvis Presley. She has sung in over 18 languages, recorded over 12,000 songs, and collaborated with musicians across the world, from Michael Stipe of R.E.M. and the Kronos Quartet Orchestra, to Boy George and Code Red. She has been nominated for a Grammy Award twice and her album Precious Platinum was ranked among the Top 50 World Music Albums of all time by Amazon.com last year. At the age of 77, she continues to tour the world in concert, and never ceases to astonish listeners with her versatility and her penchant for new ideas and directions in music. Ms. Bhosle was recently given a Lifetime Achievement Award at the IIFA Bollywood Awards show held in Toronto.
Hailed as one of the more serious young exponents of Indian classical music, Niladri Kumar is a rare instrumentalist with a unique musical repertoire, innovative skills, and the dexterity of swift, agile fingers. In March 2007, he won the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi's “Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar” for Instrumental Hindustani Music. He has also won the “The Sanskriti Award,” “The Jadubhatta Puraskar,” and “The MTV IMMIES for the Best Classical/Fusion Instrumental Album” for his album, IF. Having received rave reviews for his performances the world over, he is considered one of his generation’s brightest stars with a career that promises to be illustrious and innovative. He is also the creator of a unique instrument called the zitar, which is a combination of a sitar and a guitar.
