Celeb-speak: Mallika Sherawat
by Savia Rajagopal

A sex symbol who’s made the ultimate crossover from Bollywood to Hollywood. She may be sultry, hot and a complete diva but as she’d like us to believe, there’s much more to her than that.
Here’s presenting a tete-a-tete with Ms. Oomph herself, MALLIKA SHERAWAT, on a recent trip to New York.

What brings you to the U.S. this time of year?

Work! I’m here as the post production of Hisss is on and I’m getting prepared to promote it, and more importantly to prepare for my next film which happens to be an American romantic comedy that goes into production in late Fall.

You've made quite an entrance into Hollywood. How would you describe that experience?

And I’m just getting started! It’s been a very challenging and exciting period and I’m overwhelmed and grateful for the reception I’ve had. I think the best part about it would definitely be the opportunity to walk around and go to public places without being mobbed!

Do you miss home?

Sure, but I’ve been made to feel so much at home by the Hollywood film community!

What do you do in your spare time? How's Los Angeles treating you?

What spare time? Rehearsals, accent classes, Hip-Hop and Salsa dancing classes, comedy improv workshops, promotional activities … but when I do get free time I try to stay connected with my fans on Twitter (@mallikala- http://twitter.com/MalliKaLA )

Now that you've seen both sides of the coin, how does Bollywood compare to Hollywood?

Well, the stakes are different as Hollywood targets a more diverse global market, and they're a bit more organized than us desis!  Bollywood works more on passion and emotional relationships.  We can learn to be more organized from them and they can learn more about emotional bonds from us.

You have a fabulous body and have been acknowledged as a sex symbol time and again. Do you still see that as a huge compliment or is it getting tiring?

I work hard on staying in shape so obviously it’s a compliment, but that’s only one small part of my personality – at the end of the day I’m an actress and recognition for acting is always more fulfilling.

What's next for you?

We’ll be announcing my next film soon. It’s a romantic comedy with an all-American cast set during last year’s historic American Presidential elections.

Any message for your Canadian fans?

I will be visiting Canada before the release of Hisss. I have fond memories of my trips to Canada – the visit to the Toronto Film Festival with Jackie Chan, and then as part of a Bollywood Tour with Salman Khan. Don’t let the cold stop you from getting your Hisss tickets when it releases – it’s gonna be hot!!!
