Restaurant Review: Saravana Bhavan

I recently had the chance to return to one of my favourite vegetarian restaurants in Toronto. I'm a huge fan of South Indian food, and have found a perfect haven for my cravings at Saravanaa Bhavan, with its two locations in both Mississauga and Scarborough (see details below). A few weeks ago, following Eid namaaz in Scarborough, my family and I treated ourselves to a weekday brunch at the Scarborough location.
It's always great to be the first participants in a freshly prepared buffet! The lunch menu was fully laid out and beautifully presented. The variety was excellent and consisted of many of my favourite items: sambhar, rasam, bisi bela bath (sambhar rice), poryals (lightly steamed veggies sauteed with mustard seed and coconut), chapatis, puris, vegetable korma, chana, and many others.
Not content with only the buffet items on our weekday Eid indulgence, we also ordered an array of more "breakfasty" items for our table. My kids relished their masala dosas and idlis and we lovingly sampled the steaming hot medhu vada brought to our table, all garnished perfectly with the sambhar and all the right chutneys.
Having enjoyed vast amounts of southie food in its native Chennai, I can't help but note that SB's authenticity is impeccable. Further, the excellent service for which the chain is note has also been replicated in its Canadian incarnation. Not only is the restaurant immaculate, but the service is top-notch and the demeanour of the staff so hospitable and welcoming. To top it off, we enjoyed a princely brunch for around $10.99 each. A great meal and a great deal!
