Vancouver International Bhangra Competition
Vancouver: In it's 3rd year, The VIBC ( Vancouver International Bhangra Competition ) has become one of the premier south Asian events in North America. Presented by Telus, the competition has grown each year in attendance; events, workshops and media buzz surrounding the finale. Due to it's popularity in the lower mainland, this year marked the 1st time that the VIBC was extended from 3 days to a 5 day event. Beginning with the opening ceremonies on Jan 16th, the organizers were able to secure UBC's Robson Square each evening until the 20th. This venue lies right in the heart of downtown Vancouver and is a very popular throughout the year for a number of high profile events, concerts and festivals. Each evening was filled with a talented lineup of live performances by local dancers, singers and musicians. Attendees were treated to bhangra workshops and live concerts that had the
crowd dancing all evening long. Unfortunately, due to this year's uncharacteristic winter storms and sub zero temperatures, attendance for these free events was slightly down but the spirit and excitement of those who weathered the cold more than made up for it.
The competition itself brought 10 teams from all across North America who were all competing for the 1st prize of $5000 and bragging rights as the top bhangra team in North America and maybe even the world.
Bhangra Competition Performers:
Da Real Punjabis - California
Duniya Allstar Boys - Vancouver
Lethal Bhangra Crew- California
National Bhangra Association - California
Phulorida Bhangra - Florida
Sher Foundation - California
UBC Girlz- Vancouver
UC Davis's Di Dynasty - California
United Bhangra - Vancouver
VCU Swaraj- Virginia
Each team electrified the crowd with their high energy and unique dance styles, which was complemented by their fabulous and colorful outfits. Unfortunately, there could only be only one winner and it was the reigning champions from 2006 the UBC Girlz who set themselves apart from the rest of the teams with their high flying acrobatic dance moves that incorporated a human tower into their routine.
In addition to the competition, the VIBC invited 2 featured international acts from London, England. Juggy D and the original Bhangra band DCS performed live prior to the announcement of the winning team. Both acts also performed at the official after party to a sold out crowd at the Croatian Cultural Centre. Based on this years attendance and support from both community and corporate sponsors, the VIBC is sure to grow in size and scope and should be one of the most anticipated events just prior to the 2010 Olympics right here in Vancouver.
A few words from VIBC
" The VIBC is a not for profit organization run entirely by volunteers. Without the hard work, passion and dedication of our many volunteers, the VIBC would not be what it has grown to be today. We thank all VIBC volunteers for embracing the spirit of generosity and community that is Bhangra. Thank You.
