How to Eat Properly on the Go!
written by Ananya Banerjee

Most of us have a hard time in the morning eating a good breakfast as we're in a rush to get to school or work. As a result, many skip breakfast entirely, which ultimately leads us to overeating later during the day and decreasing our metabolism leading to weight gain. Many people drop by the nearest coffee shop in the morning to grab a coffee or juice along with a donut or muffin that essentially contains a high amount of empty calories and minimum nutrients. Did you know a double double in your coffee has about 200 calories!

Here are some solutions to help you eat right during the day when time is a restraint!

  • Cereal or oatmeal bars are the best option in the morning to eat especially those high in fibre and fruits. The varieties are endless in the grocery stores and are relatively inexpensive.
  • If you need your caffeine fix, try substituting 2% milk instead of the cream and having one spoon of sugar or substitute it with brown sugar or calorie-free sweetner. If you love lattes, hold of the whip cream and make sure to ask for low-fat milk rather than whole milk.
    • To cut more calories, you can mix half coffee and half lattes or cappuccinos to still have that rich taste.
  • Milk is the best drink for the morning and make sure it's 2%, 1% or skim.
Remember, studies show drinking low fat milk helps flatten your belly!
  • Make sure there is no added sugar in your juices.
Orange juice is the best selection especially if it is pure.
  • If you enjoy eating bagels, make sure you order whole grain or mutli-grain bagels. You can also ask for low fat cream cheese or margarine to spread on rather then butter.
  • It is best to pack a lunch especially the night before.
  • If you usually go out for lunch, avoid burgers and fries. Try eating wholesome sandwiches or subs filled with lean meats and veggies. You can avoid the cheese and mayonnaise and ask for low fat sauces.
  • Cottage cheese, yogurt, celery, peppers, carrots and apples. Throw some berries into a Tupperware with some cottage cheese and nuts, and take it with you. It's better than standard machine food.
  • Know how to order in a restaurant. When eating out, choose fish, lean meat or chicken and a ton of vegetables. Tell them to hold the potatoes or rice and double the veggies. Send the bread back and skip dessert (or order fresh berries, even if they're not on the menu).
