Goa
Geography
Goa is on the west coast of India situated between the
borders of Maharastra and Karnataka. It is better known
to the world at large as the former Portuguese enclave on
the Indian soil.
History
Goa's history stretches back to the 3rd century BC when
it formed part of the Mayuryan Empire. Goa fell to the Muslims
for the first in 1312, but the invaders were forced to evacuate
it in 1370. The Portuguese arrived in Goa in 1510 under
the command of Alfonso de Albuquerque and ruled for over
450 years.
Language and Culture
With its significant Portuguese influence, Goa is considered
unique compared to any other part of India. The proportion
of Christians in the total population of Goa is much higher
than that in most of the other States; the general way of
living is also significantly different. Goa is more heavily
influenced by the West; the people are relaxed and casual.
Goans speak English, Konkani, Marathi and Portuguese. The
majority of Goans are Hindus, but there are a significant
minority of Christians and some Muslims.
Weather
Goa's casual lifestyle is best experienced during the winter
months between October and the end of February when the
weather is warm and pleasant. The remainder of the year
are filled with hot, humid weather or monsoonal rains.
Currency
The currency in Goa is the Indian Rupee.
What to Do
Festivals and celebrations abound in the early part of the
year. January has the colourful festival of Shantadurga
Prasann, February the three day zatra of Shri Mangesh, and
in March is the festival of Holi, called Shigmo. Goa is
known for its beaches - by day or night. During the day,
play in the water or lie on the beach. At night, enjoy a
seafood dinner, visit a club or go to a rave. Tired of the
beach? Goa also has wildlife preserves, parks and beautiful
churches and temples.
