Now over 100 years old, the Indian cinema industry is perhaps the world’s largest yet is still focused on audiences in the sub-continent itself. It makes sense that Indian production companies would want to focus on catering to the hundreds of millions of film-goers in India over smaller outside markets but this generally means that of the 1000+ titles which get released every year, only a handful make it to screens in countries abroad.
In addition to new releases, there is also a wealth of quality older Indian films which are not available for purchase or rent (in and outside of India) – mainly due to the high output of new films leaving mass audiences not interested in old movies. Just dating back to the Kishor Kumar days of the 1950s there are hundreds, if not thousands, of classic films which generations of people have grown up loving, that currently cannot be watched again because there is nowhere to find them.
