Welcome to the first edition of the "Colors by Suraj",
a monthly report on the world of fashion that highlights the traditions
of South Asian culture with the western fashion of the 21st Century.
We look forward to your speaking to you every month and hearing
your feedback.
Fashion is always evolving, capturing an individual's unique
style and personality. Gone are the days that traditional garbs
are considered to be a fashion faupas. Today Indian influences
have been embraced on every fashion forefront. From clothing and
jewellery to fabrics and interior design. Not to be outdone, western
influences have found their way eastward mixing into a fashion
fusion.
What's in store for the summer and fall of 2002. Lighter colours
like pastels take center stage of the palette. Short shirts with
bell-bottoms or salwars are a must have. When we talk about more
formal occasions saris are classic. Georgettes and chiffons compliment
the feminine form beautifully. Lehngas have reinvented themselves
yet again. Designed in a variety of shapes and styles perfect
for every occasion. Our New Dream Collection line combines embroidered
churidhars with pants to create a new, elegant but fun look around
town.
Asian Suitcase Style!
11th July 2002 , BBC Asian Life
Holidays can be costly enough, but shopping to fill your case
full of fashion essentials can tip your bank balance over the
edge. But with ethnic flavour the seasonal favourite, holiday
must haves' needn't be expensive. Asian Life's guide to the perfect
Desi suitcase needn't cost a fortune and will prove the hottest
accessorises under the sun.

Dig out a few colourful chunis from the back of the wardrobe,
not only do they take up no room in a suitcase, they look great
used as sarongs over bikinis and double as funky bandanas to keep
hair cool and protected. A sheer fabric suits a sexy sarong while
a raw silk won't slip off your head.
A good bag is a must, whether for shopping, at the beach or airplane
hand luggage. Take a favorite old cushion and securely sew on
a strap. Try using an old belt or pretty ribbons. Hey presto!
Not only do you have a one-off design, but your bag is zipped
and ready to carry.
Flip-flops keep getting funkier, but forget high-street designs.
Keep it real with authentic sandals comfy enough to wear to the
beach and pretty enough to wear of an evening. Khusas are perfect
to slip slop your way to the shore. London Footwear and Shalimar
offer affordable Asian design.
To really make an entrance on the sands or around the pool, leave
your beach towel at home. Use a few yards of an old sari to wrap
around your waist. Choose floral or pretty patterns, pale colors
and light fabrics. Lower gently onto sand or lounger and lie in
cheap luxury.
Dig out the sounds of Kathak chains and anklets. Nothing looks
as good on bare feet in the sand as silver jewels. And let's face
it, when else are you going to use them! Warn off rogue traders
by carrying a selection of bangles and an apologetic 'Sorry, I've
already purchased' smile!
Sari blouses are great holiday tops when worn with shorts, skirts
and jeans. Choose light cottons for day and heavier silks for
evening glamour. For the brave - a kameez is a perfect summer
dress when worn alone, so free your legs and leave your trousers
at home.

Colors and Stress
"Expert Advice on How Colors Can Be Comforting in
Time of Stress"
Among the many things that offer comfort in time of great
stress are the colors that surround you, according to
noted personality expert Dewey Sadka.
Sadka, who has researched the influence of color on personality
for over 20 years, says browns are comfort colors that
create a down-to-earth perspective that encourage you
to be more aware, authentic, and compassionate.
"North Americans" are accustomed to comfort
words and phases, like 'freedom' and 'love you' and even
fond of comfort foods like mashed potatoes and hot apple
pie," says Sadka. "But comfort colors, as described
in my book, are subliminally recognized, and are equally
as healing."
Coincidentally, brown shades are presently very trendy
and available in fashion and decor. Plus Sadka says, there
are a number of hot colors that add a soothing touch to
what you already own.
Sadka describes in the Dewey Color System(TM) to surround
yourself with:
CAMEL, lime green with brown -- You become better
able to sample new pleasures and enjoy living in the moment.
Things happen spontaneously. Only later do you reflect
back on events and decide if you'd like to experience
them again.
OLIVE, green with brown -- You will become more
grounded and secure. This color will encourage you to
share your concerns about others, to receive supportive,
practical solutions. Others will see you as more giving
and fun.
EGGPLANT, purple with brown -- Like a scientist,
you will be better able to examine things, and experiment
with them to make improvements. Your factual, no-nonsense
approach makes you appear very bold, because you express
yourself as a knowledgeable person.
SIENNA, indigo with brown -- You will see practical
plans. This color creates a sharper awareness of what
exactly needs to be done. You will become more of a doer.
You will undertake more things, and become more self-confident.
CLAYPOT, orange with brown -- You will consider
how things started. Understanding how things are made
will enable you to eliminate what you don't want. You
become refreshed, able to appreciate all the things that
you are doing.
EARTH, black with brown -- You will become more
stable with both feet on the ground. This strong achromatic
hue will encourage you to be more decisive about what
you want. Seeing the end product will become especially
important. You will also be better able to offer practical
advice to others.
BROWN -- You will become more aware, authentic
and compassionate. This achromatic color gives you the
power to better understand your reality. Your motivation
becomes more about experiencing the sensations of each
day.
TAN, brown and white -- You will better know what
will give you the most pleasure in life. This achromatic
shade gives you the ability to evaluate what is best for
you. You will become more aware of when others are excessive
or not comfortable with his or hers desires.
BEIGE, mostly white with brown -- You will feel
more compelled to experience new desires. Feeling more
complete with your surrounding is your goal. You are seeking
a journey where your expectations and desires are only
the things you can get.
DARK PURPLE, purple with black -- You will become
better able to understand your underlying motivations.
By identifying the emotions behind specific actions, you
will better gauge your own potential. You will recognize
hidden motivations in yourself and others.
