The
Canada South Asia Collective is proud to initiate
the Festival of South Asian Documentary Films in Toronto. This
Festival will take place from March 13th to 19th,
2000. It will showcase over 30 outstanding South Asian
documentary films that provide an in-depth treatment
of pressing South Asian issues, including history,
culture, art, environment, gender and activism. Drawing
from these excellent films, the Festival hopes to
effuse a renewed vision of South Asia and its diasporaÛa
vision of complexity, diversity and dynamism. The
goals of the festival are encapsulated in the title,
ÏDristiÓ which in Sanskrit means ÏvisionÓ or
ÏinsightÓ.
The Festival will screen films by award-winning documentary
filmmakers like Meera Dewan (Amreet Beeja)
and Tanvir Mokammel (Achin Pakhi) as well
as films by emerging film makers like Farjad Nabi
(Nusrat has left the Building÷But When?)
and Tshering Rhitar (The Spirit DoesnÌt
Come Anymore).
Other highlights of the festival include a film on
the life of Rabindra Nath Tagore by the inspirational
Bengali filmmaker Satyajit Ray, Reena MohanÌs
film Skin Deep which explores perceptions of
body image among contemporary urban women in India,
Christopher MitchellÌs film Mr Jinnah:
The Making of Pakistan on the complexities of
Jinnah and turbulent times in which he lived, and
Sanjeev ChatterjeeÌs Pure Chutney which
explores the South Asian Diaspora in Trinidad and
Tobago.
Two aspiring filmmakers from Toronto, Sarah Kapoor
(DonÌt Pass Me By) and Britt Hamilton
(A Day Will Come) will be attending the festival
