It was a night of entertainment, prestige and glamour all
as the 12th annual Miss India-Canada pageant began with
the16 contestants paying tribute to this year's Guest of
Honour, Raveena Tandon, by dancing to the tunes from a few
of her hit movies.
The judges were then put to the test as each contestant
went through the first three segments: Indian Costume, Evening
Gown, and Talent. The Top 5 finalists were then introduced
in random order: Anjulie Gill of Richmond, BC; Anu Singh
of Mississauga, ON; Joyti Kapoor of Markham, ON; Subeena
Ishaq of Brampton, ON, and Shivani Singh of Mississauga,
ON. The final segment of Question & Answer involved asking
each contestant a different question on stage before the
panel of judges.
As the audience waited, emcees Karen Johnson and Rupinder
Nagra announced the runner-ups: the Second Runner-up was
Anu Singh and the First Runner-up was Subeena Ishaq. Karen
and Rupinder then went on to call Raveena Tandon on stage
to crown Shivani Singh as Miss India-Canada 2002.
The 24 year old native of Mississauga, ON recently completed
her Bachelor of Business at York University. She now wants
to try her luck in the entertainment field, but more importantly,
she wants to be a role model to young South Asians by becoming
involved in more community events.
Notable mentions go to Kiranjit Bedi from Winnipeg, MB
and Subeena Ishaq from Brampton, ON were selected Miss Congeniality
and Ms. Photogenic, respectively.
