ENTITLEMENT, a new play by Sugith Varughese

ENTITLEMENT, a new play by award-winning screenwriter and actor Sugith Varughese (CBC’s famed Best of Both Worlds movie, and many Canadian TV series as a writer, as well as a recurring role on Little Mosque on the Prairie among 75 other movie and TV credits as an actor) premieres at the Summerworks Theatre Festival in Toronto, August 8-18.

Directed by acclaimed director and actor, David Ferry, the play explores the current state of education as it has become transformed to “edutainment” by a system dependent more on maintaining tuition income than maintaining standards.

A biting satire, the play is set in a modern day college, run a dynamic young female Dean, played by Dora-award winning actress KAREN ROBINSON. She hires an out of work screenwriter, Anish, played by SAM KHALILIEH, to teach an introductory scriptwriting course in her new filmmaking program. But Anish’s methods to bring industry-level standards to the millenials in the program are challenged by an entitled young student, Dylan, played by newcomer CHRISTO GRAHAM. As the three poles of education – instructor, student and administrator — battle for control, the play brings all to a confrontation and ultimately a new understanding of what is at stake for each of them going forward.

Timely, funny and painfully honest, the play is partly based on the playwright’s experiences teaching scriptwriting at the college level.

As a festival production, all revenue for the artists involved comes from the box office after costs are recouped. To supplement box office revenue, Sugith Varughese established a 30-day crowdfunding campaign on indiegogo.com, to raise $3000. That goal was achieved within ten days and further funds will go to enhance the production.

Born in Kerala and raised in Saskatoon, Sugith Varughese is an accomplished writer, director (the first minority to be given admission to attend the prestigious Canadian Film Centre, founded by internationally-known director Norman Jewison), and actor. His films and TV dramas have won or been nominated for numerous awards internationally. He is the receipient of the York Trillium Award, a Writers Guild of Canada Award and last year received an Alumnus of Notable Achievement award from his undergraduate alma mater, the University of Minnesota.
