As Canada's only national South Asian music festival, desiFEST is committed to building an infrastructure that helps expose and support artists from the South Asian community. For the last 5 years, the festival has garnered nationwide success working alongside emerging and already established artists, and the result has been extraordinary! Each and every year, desiFEST delivers a one-of-a-kind showcase of talent – all in an effort to move South Asian artists and music into Canada’s mainstream. And this year is no exception. The big event takes place Saturday, May 26th, at downtown Toronto’s Yonge and Dundas Square!
By creating mainstream opportunities for South Asian artists and South Asian inspired music, desiFEST also helps strengthen local communities, inspire youth, and support the Arts community in Canada. As an outlet for a new generation of South Asian artists to gain exposure and showcase new genres of music (that combine both Eastern and Western influences), desiFEST helps connect youth with culture – culture that is both Canadian and South Asian.
desiFEST has its roots Toronto: the city commonly seen as the New York City of Canada and the hub of the music and entertainment industry. Last year, desiFEST celebrated its fifth year in Ontario’s capital, alongside the Juno Awards 40th anniversary and the debut of the Canadian installment of the International Indian Film Awards. This year will be desiFEST’s sixth time in the city.

Since the inaugural Toronto concert in 2007, desiFEST Toronto has taken place the last Saturday of May. The festival is held right in the heart of the city (at the famous Yonge and Dundas Square) where over 35,000 visitors help set record high attendance numbers each and every year. Since the concert’s inception, desiFEST has reached well over 100,000 fans in Toronto alone!
And while desiFEST is based in Toronto, this hasn’t stopped the festival from expanding nationwide: the movement found its way to Montreal and even Vancouver! desiFEST Montreal debuted in the famous Just for Laughs museum with an indoor concert (where a crowd of over 1500 witnessed a featured a DJ competition!). In Vancouver, more than 5000 people, over 26 bands and dancers, local celebrities, and government officials made the inaugural desiFEST Vancouver launch a huge success!
With the Canada-wide expansion, desiFEST evolved into a national platform for South Asian artists to showcase their talents. To date, the festival has featured over 150 artists at events across the country! Included in the mix are Apache Indian, JoSH, the Bilz & Kashif, Roach Killa, Parichay, Raghav, Deesha, and many more. And in addition to South Asian inspired music performances, desiFEST also features contemporary indo-jazz fusion, global beats, and cutting edge dance performances each and every year, boasting 12 hours of foot-tapping music!
desiFEST is produced by Namaste Marketing Group Inc., an agency focused on engaging the growing South Asian market across Canada and creating one-to-one engagements between brands and consumers. Namaste has produced Canadian Music Week and Junofest showcases, along with its own properties, desiFEST and Bollywood in the Square. The group is committed to supporting and building multi-cultural communities in Canada.
So don’t forget to mark May 26th, 2012 on your calendars for desiFEST! It’s sure to be an experience unlike any other. Toronto, it’s time to get desiFIED!
