While the first ever to be globally televised dance reality show is gearing up for its first round of auditions, there is a lot of enthusiasm among contestants as to their journey and new paths that Warraich Grill Naach Meri Jaan would lead to.
For some, it is the passion for dance that is making them take centre stage. For others, it is a challenge to see how far ahead in the competition they can get. For still others, it is coming back to dance after a long sabbatical.
Janvi Pathak, from Oakville, is one such contestant. “When our instructor brought it up, I thought it was a great way of experiencing a reality dance competition. It was great exposure and I wanted to see how far my passion would take me in a competition as global as Warraich Grill Naach Meri Jaan.”
“Dance will definitely always be a part of my lifestyle. I have a passion for Dance and when you have a passion for something, it is really hard to stop. I am really excited about the competition and have been practising really really hard”, said Pathak.
Pathak started dancing at the age of nine, training initially with the Shiamak Davar International in Toronto as a recreational dancer and then with Sanskriti Arts as a Junior Professional Dancer.
Warraich Grill Naach Meri Jaan, presented in association with Glitterati Entertainment and Sanskriti Arts was created to promote the awareness of talent revolving around the South Asian dance forms including Bhangra, Bollywood and Fusion. It is set to take place in over 12 cities in North America, including Toronto, with semi-finals and finals to be broadcast on Star Plus, India.
Puja Amin, the local Toronto organizer of Warraich Grill Naach Meri Jaan, passionately wants the next superstar to be from Canada. “We have such amazing talent in Canada. In fact, contestants are coming from all over the country to be a part of this huge dance competition and we strongly believe that the next superstar may well be Canadian.”
Oakville resident Erica Ramirez who goes by the artist name Shruti Ramirez, and is originally from Colombia, is another excited contestant. “I love Bollywood and I love Bollywood Dance”, says Ramirez. “When I was in Colombia, I travelled all the way to Florentina to learn from a Bollywood Dance teacher. I have done a lot of Bollywood dance shows in Colombia and Argentina. In fact, I used to teach over Bollywood dance to 100 girls in Argentina”, says Ramirez.
Ramirez has trained in Kathak for a year and will be taking up dance after an absence of two years as she was busy being a Mom. For her, she says, this is like ‘homecoming.’”
“It is different for dancers in Canada. I am not from this country. English is not my first language and Bollywood is not my culture. So personally for me, I am really excited about this opportunity to showcase my talent in Bollywood Dance,” adds Ramirez who believes Warraich Grill Naach Meri Jaan is offering a platform for all dancers to showcase their talent.
