Sikh Centennial Foundation
The Sikh Centennial Foundation is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1997 to commemorate the centenary of Sikh settlement in Canada. Since then it has been privileged to be in the forefront of promoting Sikh and, generally, South Asian heritage and culture by promoting awareness and understanding of Sikh and South Asian milestones and organizing the celebration of major Sikh events; promoting an understanding of the Sikh way of life amongst the community at large; creating and fostering a positive and accurate image of Sikhs in the media; and celebrating the participation and excellence achieved by Sikhs in all aspects of civil, social and cultural life.
In the face of colossal adversity- anti-immigration laws and riots aimed at keeping Sikhs out; disenfranchised and unable to join most professions and to own land in most areas until 1947; prevented from wearing their articles of faith - Sikhs have produced premiers, formidable entrepreneurs, athletes, poets, artists and everyday Canadian citizens proud to brandish the maple leaf and display their love of their faith.
It is this spirit that the Centennial Foundation celebrates every year at Vaisakhi. Every year Centennial honours Sikh and non-Sikh individuals who have truly excelled in all walks of life and represent the best of Sikh ideals and principles. This is their story and our triumph.
The Sikh Centennial Foundation Annual Vaisakhi Gala is the highlight of the year for the Sikh diaspora in Canada. Over the past several years, we have hosted the Prime Minister of Canada, numerous Ministers and politicians, leaders of industry, distinguished entrepreneurs and accomplished artists, in what has become the most prestigious South Asian event in North America. Every year the Sikh Centennial Foundation honors both exemplary Sikhs and non-Sikhs whose accomplishments deserve recognition. In the past, honorees have included Chief Justice Roy McMurtry of Ontario; Justice Wally Oppal, the current Attorney General of BC; humanitarians Stephen Lewis and June Callwood; Sarbjit Marwah, Chief Financial Officer of the Bank of Nova Scotia; and Emanuel Sandhu, internationally ranked Canadian figure skater.
The 2006 Vaisakhi Gala will be hosted at the historic Carlu Theatre in the heart of downtown Toronto on Saturday April 1, 2006. Professor Mohanbir Singh Sawhney ("The John Maynard Keynes for the Net age") of the Kellogg School of Management will provide the keynote address. In addition, guests will have an opportunity to view a unique historical exhibit and participate in the recognition of exemplary honorees for 2006 including Kushwant Singh, author, diplomat and politician; Nimrata Kaur Randhawa-Haley, state legislature Republican whip; Judge Mota Singh, the first Sikh judge in the United Kingdom; and Iqbal Qaiser, author and historian. And the evening will be completed with energizing entertainment, authentic South Asian Cuisine and a live auction of Sikh art. Guests will also receive a complimentary copy of I.J. Singh's fourth book: "The World According to Sikhi" which will be released at the Vaisakhi Gala.
