South Asian Alliance (SAA)
South Asian Alliance, or more commonly known as SAA, is one of the largest non-profit, student-run organizations in Canada. With six chapters across Ontario (University of Toronto St. George, Scarborough and Mississauga, York University, McMaster University, Ryerson University), representing a membership base of over 10,000 students, SAA not only celebrates South Asian culture, but builds understanding and acceptance for diversity.
Founded in 1998, SAA has grown significantly in the past 7 years of its existence. The SAA organizes a variety of large-scale social, academic, cultural, and humanitarian events to achieve its goal of unity through such events.
As an umbrella organization, the SAA has is uniquely positioned to represent individuals from a variety of South Asian backgrounds. By bridging the gap between differences, and celebrating similarities, it takes pride in representing the entire South Asian sub-continent - making SAA the only organization of its kind in North America.
In addition to being recognized for programming and community leadership, SAA boasts a strong alumni network and a diverse group of members. Last year alone the SAA raised $20,000 for the Tsunami relief fund, sponsored 6 children in South Asia through Foster Parent Plan, and donated 200 new toys to The Hospital of Sick Children during the holiday season.
Not only do SAA members attend SAA events each year but they also act year, the SAA also facilitates a tight knit community with its large on-campus presence. By being the voice of the South Asian student community, SAA builds an invaluable support system throughout a student's university career and life.
This March 17 - 19, 2006, the SAA is hosting the most anticipated dance and cultural competition Toronto has been waiting for. At 11 am on March 18, 2006 the doors at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga will open to a massive crowd of 4000, as the SAA hosts for the city's largest South Asian student event ever. With 14 competing dance and spirit troupes, composed of over 2000 participants, this event promises some of the best South Asian talent.
