Developments in Literacy (DIL)

The Developments in Literacy organization (DIL), a nonprofit, voluntary organization was launched in February 1997 in Southern California. DIL's Toronto chapter was launched in July 2005.

DIL's main purpose is to work for the eradication of illiteracy, in the remote and neglected areas of Pakistan, by establishing primary and secondary level non-formal schools for underprivileged children. DIL, has succeeded, in a period of five years, in establishing 200 schools in Pakistan in collaboration with various NGO's.

A system of credible monitoring and complete financial transparency has been maintained ever since the inception of DIL. Its projects are monitored regularly by experienced, competent individuals who visit the project sites to gauge the progress being made by the students. They also report on the standard of teaching as well as the involvement of the community-based organizations, comprised mainly of the parents of the students, which supervise the day-to-day functioning of the schools.

One year of basic education for one child costs $50. It takes at least five years or in monetary terms $250 to make one child literate. The cost of sponsoring an entire school for one year is $1250, and for five years $6250.

All travel costs incurred by the DIL Executive Board are borne fully by the members themselves so that every cent of donors' contribution is spent only on education. DIL needs the encouragement and financial support of caring people, not only to continue maintaining the already established schools into the future but also to expand its work, so that as many underprivileged children as possible can benefit from this program.
