South Asian Women's Centre

The South Asian Women's Centre formerly known as South Asian Women's Group was founded in 1982. It was one of the first South Asian Agencies established in Toronto. Our clientele has expanded substantially over a period of time. There is a helping hand to every women who walks in the centre, whether she is a refugee woman, victim of abuse or a professional newcomer woman looking for career prospects. Women from different diversities have access to a multiplicity of resources, programs, services designed on the basis of their needs.

The South Asian Women's Centre ("SAWC") of Toronto is an organization committed to helping women achieve social and economic independence in Canadian Society through the provision of culturally and linguistically appropriate services to the community living in the Greater Toronto Area.

The SAWC's objective is to assist women integrate into Canadian society through:

• Wellness Groups
. Women from different languages such as Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, and Tamil can access Multicultural Women's Wellness Groups run at the center. These groups are facilitated in their own language and have proven positive impacts on the lives of many women who are survivors of abuse and looking for supports to rehabilitate and take charge of their own lives.

• The Senior Women's Group. A multilingual group accessed by isolated or abused elder women. It is a representative group, which provides a platform for information, exchange of cultural values and self-development.

• Job Skills Training
• Community service referrals
• Wife/child/senior abuse prevention
• Youth services
• Health promotion
• Support services
• Homework club


The SAWC is also committed to increasing community awareness of immigrant settlement issues through education.

Services
Immigrant and refugee women can access a basketful of services - completion of basic paper work, employment to overall rehabilitation, referrals and networking with community services and resources. We offer language training classes, interpretation and translation services, supportive counseling and assistance, advocacy for challenging cases, information about social services and housing.
