On leaving Vancouver in 1958, King
began travelling the world to shoot television documentaries
for the CBC programme "Close-up." In Rickshaw,
one of the best, he films a middle-aged man running barefoot
through the streets of Calcutta, pulling his rickshaw behind
him. As George Robertson's narration tells us, the man has
been doing this for most of his adult life and has nothing
to show for it. Now, as if to compound his tragedy, he will
pass his career on to his son and return to his shabby village,
just as poor as he was when he left it.
