Here are a few films you won't want to miss –

CHOKHER BALI, A PASSION PLAY (Rituparno Ghosh) Saturday, September 6, 12:30pm, Isabel Bader Theatre and Tuesday, September 9, 11:30am, Uptown 2.

Set in early 20th century Calcutta, this beautifully acted and directed film is based on short story by the Nobel prize-winning writer Rabindranath Tagore.  It follows the lives of two widows, and the complex societal and family relations that surround them.

A NATION WITHOUT WOMEN (Manish Jha) Wednesday, September 10, 5:45pm, Uptown 2 and Thursday, September 11, 4:15pm, Varsity 1 and 6.

One of the most startling debut features to emerge from India in recent memory.  Using the incendiary issue of female infanticide, this film follows the unhappy existence of a young woman, who ends up being married to five brothers, due to the lack of available brides.  This film is not for the squeamish, but it is as affecting and important as any you're likely to see.

MAQBOOL (Vishal Bharadwaj) Wednesday, September 10, 9pm, Uptown 2 and Saturday, September 13, 9:15am, Varsity 8

A take on Shakespeare's Macbeth, the film centers around Maqbool, second lieutenant in a crime gang, who has his eye set on the top spot in the gang.  A web of deceit and doubling crossing ensues, with a dash of Bollywood song and dance thrown in for good measure.
