Jawani 2K8 International Bhangra Competition
May 2008
Jawani, is the Punjabi term referring to the youthful days of ones life. Jawani 2K8 is an event for South Asian youths in which they will perform the original folk dance of Punjab: Bhangra.
This year's competition will feature 6 international teams, who will compete for the top three awards, which will be awarded to the teams that display a varied and vivid array of dances and also show connection between the roots of Punjab and themselves and express there love for their culture by performing the dance of Bhangra. After the completion of the performances, the audience gets to join in for open floor dancing as the after party of Jawani 2K8.
Since this is the 5th year since the Jawani Culture Show has been running locally, the organizers have decided to make Jawani 2K8 an international event with teams coming from all around the world to compete. The after party will include live performances by a few of the top well known singers in the South Asian Community. You will be sure to make the right choice when become apart of Jawani 2K8 … believe the hype, because Jawani Only Comes Once!!!
Charitable Information
Proceeds from this event will be going to help two charities this year The Heart & Stroke Foundation of Ontario and Free the Children (White Rose Project @ York University)
The Heart and Stroke Foundation, a volunteer-based health charity, leads in eliminating heart disease and stroke through the advancement of research and its application and the promotion of healthy living. For over 50 years, the Heart and Stroke Foundation has been a leading supporter of world-class heart and stroke research in Canada. They work with hundreds of hospitals- and university-based research teams across the country to investigate the causes, prevention and treatment of these life-threatening diseases that will affect a vast majority of Canadians over their lifetime.
White Rose Project is a York University based organization that is a chapter of the biggest world-wide organization of "children helping children" - Free the Children. Our goal is to help build a sustainable village in one of the following locations: China, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka or Kenya. The money raised will provide a less fortunate community with basic necessities such as a school, medical supplies, water sanitation, food and alternative incomes for the families such as a goat or sewing machine.
