Zuul's Evil Disco
by Mohit Rajhans

TORONTO - Have you ever had a friend that would just not respect your reasons for not wanting to go out on a Saturday night?? Well, that such friend spent the better part of last Saturday night trying to convince me that I should iron out my social wrinkles and join him to witness ëZuulís Evil Discoí. Now, I have never been accused of judging a book by itsí cover, but ZUULíS EVIL DISCO?? I could already feel my lack of patience 3 hours before the show.

Nevertheless, the Queen St. charm summoned me to Horseshoe Tavern for a night I had already mentally written off. I paid my cover with uneasiness and entered the world of...and I mean the distinct world of Zuulís Evil Disco.

This is a group of crazy performers that are sure to catch your eye, entertain you, and make you groove! Toronto is saturated with live band performances during the summer months, and those who have room for one more show in them, should check out one of the most energetic and unique bands to come out of the independent scene in years.

Using that clever mix of Öeverything the 8 piece band surfed through a 10 song set of music, capturing such a broad variety of musical genre and mastering experimental challenges. There is nothing more refreshing than seeing a band that is organized, well rehearsed, yet amazingly fresh. This must be a result of the mosaic of the band; 7 people, all different races, all different backgrounds and making music from there common University ground of London, Ontario. The separate characters of the group all come together to truly make it happen. If you are a person who enjoys the refreshing change of music that does not need to be categorized to be enjoyed, please take the time to go check out this magnificent human ball of energy, and you'll thank me as I did my friend after the show.

Final notes; I think Ajay Massey (band member) might be one of the most talented guitarists I have seen live, and Prince is possibly one of the best break dancers to rock the mic. Zuul's represents some of the finest in the fusion of funk, soul, alternative, jazz and old school in the indie scene. Check out up and coming gigs at www.zuulsevildisco.com

Watcha talkin' 'bout Willis?

Ajay enjoys collecting Pac-Man paraphernalia, and writing cheesy Casio tunes. His guitar is autographed by the legendary 'swordsman' Ron Jeremy.

Prince is an avid breakdancer and enjoys mint green chutney with his meals.
