Indian Ocean Flowed in Toronto!
November 3, 2007
The 4 members of Indian Ocean, the Indianclassical/folk/rock fusion ensemble that performed inQueen Elizabeth Theatre on Saturday night at theExhibition Place, completely mesmerized theiraudience, as they got enthralled by the soulful musicexperience! The music was overwhelming for most of theaudience as they sank in their seats from thebeginning until the end, going in trance with themusical waves of the Indian Ocean.
The concert was organized by Toronto's own"Nomans|Land Promotions", a new world-music promotionsand event management organization. The main goal ofthe organization is, "To promote and spread soulfulworld-music in the Canadian audience to attainawareness about world cultures and develop sensitivitytowards them through soulful music". This goal trulybecame alive when the audience witnessed a guestviolinist from waterloo do a fusion piece in thetraditional/folk Indian Ocean song, "Ma Rewa". Italmost felt like a wedding of instruments from totallydifferent backgrounds.
The band gave a brief introduction to each track theyperformed, as the audience was extremely diverse, andnot everyone understood Hindi. One of the songs,"Kandisa" was in Aramaic, an ancient language spokenin the time of Jesus, greatly admired by the audiencefrom different faiths and backgrounds. Another wascalled "Bhor" meaning 'Dawn', which is about a flightof a bird on its journey from one dawn to the other!
Most of the people in the audience lined up towardsthe end of the concert to buy cds and get autographsfrom the band, rejoicing with big smiles in thepictures they took.
Nomans|Land Promotions vows to bring more world-musicartists to Canada in future and work together withorganizations with similar goals, and with groups thatbelieve in bridging the gaps in world cultures throughart, music and education.
