Viren Sahai (Amitabh Bachan) is a notorious mob 'bhai' in the new movie Family. His connections are so powerful, that even though he runs his business from Bangkok, he can have people killed in Mumbai at a seconds notice.
No one messes with Viren Sahai - or his family. Even though, they don't really seem like a family.
Sahai's son (Sushant Singh) is the only person Sahai has contact with on a regular basis - usually when he (his son) needs his father's help to bail him out of trouble. Also, Sharada (Shernaz Patel), Sahai's wife, has estranged her husband because she does not want her children or her five-year-old grandson to be exposed to the mob lifestyle.
Meanwhile, Shekhar Bhatia (Akshay Kumar) is the complete opposite of Sahai - with a very different definition of family.
Shekhar, a happy-go-lucky cook at a local eatery, is his parent's 'good son', compared to his younger brother Aryan (Aryeman). Every time Aryan gets into trouble after his crazy ventures fall-out, Shekhar is there to save him. Whether it's bailing his younger brother out of jail, or beating up 'gundas' on the street - Shekhar protects his brother like a lion.
However, two days after Shekhar marries a doctor (Bhumika Chawla), the lives of the Sahai and Bhatia family collide.
When a bitter rivalry with fellow mob boss (Kader Khan) escalates, Sahai goes on a shooting spree at a local theatre. Unfortunately, Shekhar is at the same theatre looking for his brother Aryan who has run away from home. Shekhar gets caught in the crossfire. This is where the real story starts.
After Aryan's father blames Shekhar's death on his youngest son, Aryan decides to take revenge for his brother's death. Along with his friends, who their gun supplier (Gulshan Grover) calls the "Dhandia Gang," Aryan decides to kidnap Sahai's family. But really, he wants Sahai's head.
The contrast of family dynamics between the Sahai and Bhatia family are revealed as the plot thickens, and trust begins to dwindle. As desperation sets in, even the undefeatable Sahai realizes ties of blood are weaker for some than others.
Unlike most Bollywood films, the music and dances take a back-seat to the actual plot of the movie. At times, the songs seem more like annoying commercials rather than a compliment to the film. For instance, Akshay Kumar's performance of the song, "Qatra Qatra," in 'gangsta' attire, including a white doo-rag-like-scarf and sunglasses was worth an eye roll.
As for Aryeman, his first performance in a Bollywood blockbuster wasn't that bad, especially considering he got more screen time than headliner Akshay Kumar.
