Dosti - Friends Forever
Cast: Akshay Kumar, Bobby Deol, Kareena Kapoor, Lara Dutta & Juhi Chawla
Director: Suneel Darshan
Music: Nadeem-Shravan
I have to be honest about this movie and it's not an insult to anyone except the Director Suneel Darshan. I don't read the synopsis of movies because I don't like knowing what the movie is about. In other words, I would rather watch a movie with an open mind and I don't like knowing what's going to happen next although in most Hindi movies, you do know what's coming next. At the beginning of the film, I got the impression that I was looking at the desi version of "Brokeback Mountain". Akshay and Bobby were acting more like a boyfriend/girlfriend instead of just friends. There was hand holding, staring into each other's eyes and singing lovingly to each other. But enough about that, let's get to the "reel" storyline.
"Dosti - Friends Forever" is about the friendship of Karan (Bobby Deol), a rich lonely kid whose parents ignore him and Raj (Akshay Kumar), a poor orphan. The boys meet while Karan is on vacation and they form an everlasting bond of friendship. The vacation ends and Karan begs his parents to take Raj home with them and they finally give in after much hesitation. Karan is a total brat who has a different girlfriend everyday whereas Raj only loves one girl, Anjali (Kareena Kapoor).
One day Karan meets Kaajal (Lara Dutta) and realizes that he loves her and would do anything for her. After putting him through some tests, Kaajal finally gives in to Karan and realizes she has fallen in love with him. Raj and Anjali decide to get married and when Raj learns of Karan and Kaajal's relationship, he decides that the two couples should get married on the same day. Destiny plays the villain and soon Raj and Anjali break off their relationship. Anjali ends up marrying someone else even though it's obvious that she still loves Raj. Raj leaves and soon Karan learns something disturbing about Raj, which changes their relationship forever. Destiny has played a cruel joke on Raj and Karan and there's nothing they can do.
Overall, I enjoyed the movie and I think Akshay Kumar is finally choosing good roles and he deserves all the adulation he's getting these days. Bobby Deol, Kareena Kapoor and Lara Dutta were also good in the movie but Akshay's performance stands out. The movie soundtrack is very good and I definitely recommend you pick it up if you haven't done so already. You can catch Akshay in "Jaaneman" where his co-stars are Salman Khan and Preity Zinta and then "Phir Hera Pheri". Kareena Kapoor will be seen alongside boyfriend Shahid Kapoor in the upcoming movies "36 China Town" and "Chup Chup Ke". You can also see her live on May 21st, 2006 at the Rogers Center where she will be performing along with Salman Khan, John Abraham, Shahid Kapoor, Zayed Khan and Esha Deol in the "Rock Star" concert.
