“My Brother Nikhil”
follows in the footsteps of “Phir Milenge” and
focuses on the taboo subject of AIDS. An interesting fact
about this movie is that the first line and the last line
in the movie is the phrase “My Brother Nikhil”.
The story is being told by Anu (Juhi Chawla), whose brother
Nikhil died from the AIDS virus. Nikhil was a young swimmer
who was gay and kept his sexuality a secret from his family.
Nikhil learns about his illness and soon the entire neighborhood
finds out and this creates obstacles in the way of him achieving
his dream of being a swimming champion.
Since the AIDS virus was an unknown illness at the time,
no one wanted to go near Nikhil and he was locked in a room,
shut out from the rest of the world. Anu was the one person
who could free him and with the help of a lawyer, Nikhil
is released. Soon his health starts deteriorating and he
spends the last days of his life surrounded by his family
and his boyfriend.
This is one of the best films so far this year and the story
is more touching than that of “Phir Milenge”.
Sanjay Suri has given one of his best performances to date
and deserves a best actor award for his performance in this
movie. The theme song is absolutely beautiful and is the
only song in the movie. Definitely go out and see this movie.
