DJ Tricky
|
For
over a decade now Sean Moreira, a.k.a. DJ Tricky, has been
a key figure in Canada's house music scene. As a youth growing
up in Toronto Tricky uncovered a passion for music early
on, grooving to his parents 70's tracks. He eventually joined
forces with Clint Murphy, a.k.a. Ever Most Critical and
the two started up a rap crew. They began performing for
school assemblies and parties. Soon after a young Kareem
Blake, now known as Choclair, joined the crew, the three
belting out rhymes over original hip hop beats.
Often
described as melodic music, house is comprised of rolling
baselines, soulful vocals, and soothing keys. It often encompasses
old-skool samples from the earlier days of funk and disco.
Tricky's interest in music production eventually took over
as the new sounds of hip hop and house music began to capture
his attention. Today many hip hop, R&B, and adult contemporary
artists like Sade, Mary J. Blige, Justin Timberlake, India
Arie, Angie Stone, Glenn Lewis, & Run DMC (just to name
a few) that are remixing their original tunes into house
formats because they feel they vibe. According to Tricky
these artists know that 'house is kickin' all over the world.
They're urban musicians, and house is urban..."
By
the end of the 80's Tricky was among the first to throw
down classic underground tracks. From spinning at house
parties he moved onto performances at various Toronto nightclubs,
bumping at warehouse parties and raves. In 91' moved on
to Klub Max dj'ing their Saturday nights. With several partners
including DJ Tin Tin, Tricky formed the one of the best
nights in the city for underground music, the notorious
'Deep Forest Sundays'.
Today
Toronto's urban radio station Flow 93.5 boasts Tricky Moreira
as one of their burgeoning DJ's and on-air talent. If you
catch Tricky's show 'This House' you'll be up in the early
hours of Saturday mornings catching an earful of awesome
house tracks plus interviews with top house local and international
guests.
'This
House' is the only house music show on commercial radio
in Canada. It's no doubt that this exposure keeps Tricky
at the top of his rank as he spins over T.dot airwaves.
Tricky's
show takes house to newer levels by introducing the music
to the younger generation that as of late have been inundated
by mainly hip-hop, r&b and pop. Tricky says, "'This
House' opens them up to a different feeling, different experiences.
I play music they already know, but it's thrown at them
in a different format which sparks that much more interest
in the music itself."
DJ
Tricky has toured across Canada, the U.S and England with
the World Famous Playground crew and has been featured in
a number of local and music magazines including Dojo, Klublife
and Eye. Television appearances include regular spots on
Much Music's Electric Circus and a hosting gig on Dance
Nation. If he's not spinning on the air at Flow, Tricky
is usually producing house music at his World Famous studio.
He's currently working on releasing a mixed CD.
