World Premiere of One Thousand and One Nights

The fifth anniversary edition of Luminato, Toronto Festival of Arts and Creativity, presents the world premiere of Dash Arts production of One Thousand and One Nights, dramatized and directed by Tim Supple, with stories adapted by celebrated Lebanese novelist Hanan al-Shaykh. Commissioned by Luminato and produced by Dash Arts, One Thousand and One Nights will have its world premiere at Luminato 2011 at the Joey and Toby Tanenbaum Opera Centre in Toronto.

One Thousand and One Nights brings to the stage one of the world's greatest folk story cycles, known in the West as “The Arabian Nights.” The tales are told by Shahrazad to stop King Shahrayer from taking terrible daily revenge for his wife’s infidelity. Each night, he marries a virgin and kills her the next morning. Shahrazad’s ploy is to never completely finish a story in one evening, leaving the King longing for more and, thus, prolonging her life.

These famed Arabic tales are erotic, supernatural, surprising – and even violent – and were written in Arabic, with stories gathered from India, Persia and across the great Arab Empire. One Thousand and One Nights is created and performed by actors, musicians and designers drawn from across the Arabic-speaking world over a two-year research and casting process, and will be performed in English, Arabic, and French, with surtitles.

One Thousand and One Nights marks Tim Supple’s second venture with Luminato, following Dash Arts’ South Asian rendition of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Luminato 2008. A British native, Supple has directed and adapted theatre and opera throughout the UK and in Europe, North and South America, and the Middle and Far East. In 2005, Mr. Supple launched Dash Arts with Josephine Burton to create new performances in collaboration with artists from abroad.

“The commissioning of One Thousand and One Nights is Luminato’s most significant investment in the development of new work to date,” said Luminato CEO Janice Price. “We are tremendously proud to bring this epic, groundbreaking new piece of theatre to the citizens of Toronto – and to the world.”

“Tim Supple continually captivates his audiences by transcending cultural divides and bringing diverse voices to the forefront in his productions,” said Luminato Artistic Director Chris Lorway. “Tim has a remarkable ability to create productions that allow audiences to experience classical stories in new and thought-provoking ways.”

Acclaimed novelist and writer, Hanan al-Shaykh, collaborates with Supple for One Thousand and One Nights, and is the first woman to publish a major new version of these Arabic fables. The Lebanon-born and Beirut-raised novelist was shortlisted for the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize for her novel Only in London, and is regarded as one of the foremost experts on Arab womanhood. Hanan al-Shaykh’s works have been translated into 16 languages and published around the globe.

One Thousand and One Nights is presented as a two-part theatre piece performed over successive evenings, as well as two-part weekend performances. Seeing both portions of the piece is recommended, however, each segment may be purchased on its own as a contained theatre experience. A 10% discount is offered for two-part ticket packages.
