Ten Steps to Peace

Is there a situation or an experience with someone from your past that is holding you back? Do you find yourself caught in a thought loop whenever the memory surfaces? Letting go is a commitment to the present. Releasing anger and resentment creates opportunities for new experiences and love.

I recently read Balance, Living in Harmony with Peace, Joy and Love, by Fenulla Jiwani.  Her book speaks so clearly of how self care can lead to personal transformation.  Most people know Fenulla from her sold out play 30 Dates in which Fenulla wrote, produced and starred in, and through her book she shares with the world the practice of forgiveness and healing.

She says, “Our journey through life is like a treasure chest of gold, rich in every possible way if we only open ourselves to receive it”.  To order Fenulla’s book, go to http://www.ignitethelight.ca.
Here is a 40 second meditation from the Kundalini Yoga tradition that I shared with Fenulla last week in my yoga studio in Toronto.  It is called Ten Steps to Peace.

This mediation establishes forgiveness.  It can remove unsettling thoughts from the past that surfaces into the present.  It can take difficult situations in the present and release them into the hands of Infinity.

Step 1

Sit with a straight spine in Easy Pose.  Gaze at the tip of the nose with the eyes open one-tenth of the way.  Mentally say Wahe Guru (Wah-hay-g’roo) in the following manner:

Wa - focus on the right eye
He - focus on the left eye
Guru - focus on the tip of the nose

Wahe Guru is the expression of ecstasy, of merger with the Infinite. In this mediation you will repeat the above process on each exhalation.

Step 2

Inhale and remember an encounter or memory that happened to you.

Step 3

Exhale with Wahe Guru as before.

Step 4

Inhale.  Visualize and relieve the actual feeling of the encounter.

Step 5

Exhale with Wahe Guru as before.

Step 6

Inhale and reverse roles in the encounter you are remembering.  Become the other person and experience their perspective.

Step 7

Exhale with Wahe Guru as before.

Step 8

Inhale.  Forgive the other person and forgive yourself.

Step 9

Exhale with Wahe Guru as before.

Step 10

Inhale.  Let go of the incident and release it into the Universe.

These are the 10 steps to peace.  Practice this simple meditation whenever a haunting thought surfaces.  Enjoy the process.  And remember, forgiveness is not about condoning someone else’s behavior, it is about claiming your personal power.
