Sriyah - A decade of dance making
Enchanting and transformative, India's Nrityagram Dance Ensemble is regarded worldwide as one of the foremost dance companies in the world. The ensemble, which hails from Southern India, transports viewers to enchanted worlds of magic and spirituality with the sensuous flow of Odissi, the oldest of India' classical dance forms.
Passion shines in every exquisitely polished move of this dynamic dance force. In this mezmerizing performance, Nrityagram dancers present Sriyah, a selection of works created over a decade by Artistic Director, Surupa Sen. The Sanskrit word Sriyah means from Sri (beginning). Nrityagram's creative journey started in 2000 with the piece, Sri in search of the Goddess. It was followed by Ansh (2004), Sacred Space (2006) and Pratima: Reflection (2008). Sriyah will include dances from each of these works including Vibhakta from Pratima: Reflection which Joan Acocella of The New Yorker listed in "The 10 best dance performances of 2008".
The Nrityagram Dance Ensemble is much more than a dance company. At Nrityagram, dance is a way of life. In its ashram-like compound in the Indian countryside, the dancers eat, sleep, and breathe classical dance, existing as a unique community dedicated to the education, preservation, and development of Indian dance. The founder, Protima Gauri - an exquisite Odissi dancer herself - converted ten acres of farmland into an ideal setting for the study, practice and teaching of classical dance. Nrityagram Dance Ensemble blends Odissi, a classical Indian dance form, with contemporary concepts to transport audiences to enchanted worlds of magic and spirituality. Since 1996, the year of their life-changing New York debut, The Nrityagram Dance Ensemble have toured exentsively across North America. Their performances, which are infused with exceptional synchronicity, compelling physicality and emotional honesty, have earned the ensemble international acclaim for its ability to redefine both dance and theater, and to create and communicate with powerful imagery and captivating movement.
