S.A.F.A. Seeks Applicants for Annual Scholarship

3 lucky winners will be awarded $1000 each to utilize towards their higher education Local not-for-profit society, the South Asian Family Association (www.safa.ca), is pleased to open its application process for its annual scholarship program. This year the society will be selecting 3 applicants to award $1,000 each towards their higher education.

There will be one recipient chosen from each of the following categories:  Academic Excellence, Community Involvement and, new to the selection process this year, a Fine Arts Achievement category which includes animation, drama, design, costume design, photography, writing, dance and others.
 
In order to qualify, the applicant must fulfill the following criteria:
1.     Be of South Asian descent;
2.     Be a B.C. resident or citizen under the definitions of the Immigration Act;
4.     Be enrolling into full-time studies in 2010 at an accredited institution that will lead to a first post-secondary degree;
5.     Have completed Grade 12 studies at a BC secondary school.

To apply for an award in Academic Excellence, two academic references and an official school transcript are required. To be considered for an Award for Community Involvement, the applicant must supply a listing of all of the community activities and associations in which they participated in the last three years. They should also note if and how they took on leadership role. Those applying for the Fine Arts Achievement Award are required to submit a portfolio and short written work up of their work and achiement in a particular discipline. For all awards, a 1,000 word essay is also required. Applications are due by May 31, 2010.

The lucky winners will be announced at the 8th Annual Sawan Mela festival which will be returning to Lumberman’s Arch in Stanley Park on June 12 and 13, 2010. The festival will run from 2pm - 7:30pm on Saturday and from 12p - 6pm on Sunday. On Saturday evening, the festival will be followed by the Bollywood Under the Stars event, where SAFA will present an outdoor screening of “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai”. Festival-goers are encouraged to take advantage of the shuttle bus service that will operate from Burrard Station near the Hyatt Regency hotel to Lumberman’s Arch during the festival and movie hours.

The Sawan Mela festival is a celebration of cross-cultural harmony. The more than 15, 000 who attended in 2009 enjoyed entertainment, tangy dosas, hot corn on the cob, henna tattoos and South Asian fashion and jewellery. You can expect to see the stage adorned with bhangra, giddha, Bollywood and classical Indian dancers; however keeping with SAFA’s mandate to foster cross-cultural harmony also watch for Japanese Taiko drummers,  bellydancing as well as Caribbean, Filipino, Scottish and Irish artforms. Special acts include So You Think You Can Dance finalist Arassey Reyes who will be teaching a Salsa class; Bollywood Shenanigens will return to the stage with their Butter Chicken comedy routine and multi-Juno winner Kiran Ahluwalia will be mesmerizing the crowd with ghazals and Punjabi folk music.
  
South Asian Family Association (SAFA) is a not-for-profit organization aimed at raising awareness of the South Asian culture among the mainstream and teaching South Asians about other cultures. They believe by increasing knowledge amongst one another to achieve greater tolerance and continue to work towards cultural harmony.
