Panorama's India Day Festival and Parade

As India readies itself to celebrate its 64th anniversary of Independence on 15th August, the Indian Diaspora in Canada prepare to celebrate the India Day on 13th August. So, intertwined have been the destiny of the Indian Diaspora in Canada and that of India - at the time India won its Independence from the colonial rule, Indo-Canadians won the right to vote soon after.

In Toronto, India Day is marked by a parade which over the years has become a signature event for people of Indian origin here. Last year over 10,000 people turned up for the event, most in their traditional Indian attire, imbued with rich and vibrant colours and replete with festivity and fervor.

The day-long event is being organized by Panorama India, a nonprofit organization which unites all cultural organizations and celebrates India’s unity in diversity.  This year too, Panorama has planned a whole day of exciting events including several cultural programs along with the parade at the Yonge - Dundas Square. It is anticipated that many colourful floats depicting the rich diversity of Indian culture will participate in the parade. This year the event gains special significance as 2011 is the Year of India in Canada.  Indeed, many events have preceded the parade in Toronto, the most recent being the IIFA awards and a host of cultural events in various cities across Canada.

Come join the India Day celebrations on August 13. Remember the street party at Yonge-Dundas Square after India won the World Cup? India Day promises to create the same magic again. With the patriotic songs in the morning to a special event in the evening, it holds great promise.
