Kiran Ahluwalia to Evoke the Sprit of India
Koerner Hall will be transformed by the lush sights and sounds of India on Saturday, January 22, 2010 at 8:00pm at the hands of multi award-winning vocalist and composer Kiran Ahluwalia, known for her gorgeous ghazals (a deep rooted poetic tradition from Northern India) and inspiring Punjabi folk songs.
Ahluwalia, who last performed at The Royal Conservatory during the 2008.09 season in Mazzoleni Concert Hall, located in historic Ihnatowycz Hall, will be joined by the incomparable Rhythm of Rajasthan.
Rhythm of Rajasthan, who will open the double-bill evening, is a group that is comprised of traditional hereditary caste of musicians from the Langa and Manganiar communities, as well as a dancer from the Kalbelia tribe. Their aim is to create the exciting fusion of traditional rhythms and melodies of these communities, and although both are made up of Muslim musicians, many of their songs are in praise of Hindu deities and celebrate Hindu festivals such as Diwali and Holi. The Manganiar performers traditionally invoke the Hindu God Krishna and seek his blessings before beginning their recital.
Born in India, raised in Toronto, and now living in New York City, the Juno Award-winning Kiran Ahluwalia has toured North America and Europe, building a dedicated following of lovers of music and poetry. She recently completed a 10-date European tour to rave reviews and in March 2009 she made her debut at the 2000 seat Symphony Hall in Chicago as the guest vocalist of renowned classical ensemble, the Chicago Sinfonietta. Her music has garnered unanimous international praise: UK’s, fRoots magazine said she has "a voice destined to enchant more than one generation" and US-based Sing Out magazine proclaimed that her artistry possessed "a deep spirituality and tranquility that borders on the mystic." Ms. Ahluwalia is currently completing a new full length album with producer Justin Adams, which will feature collaborations with Malian super group Tinariwen. The album is slated for release later this fall.
