Kiran Ahluwalia

Kiran Ahluwalia is a Juno Award-inning vocalist and composer who had established herself as one of Canada?s most inspiring and inventive performers. After four album releases and years of international touring, she has built a dedicated fan base for her powerful music and stunning voice.

Ms. Ahluwalia previous albums have garnered plenty of international praise: UK’s fRoots Magazine stated that she has "a voice destined to enchant more than one generation" and USA-based Sing Out Magazine said that her artistry has "a deep spirituality and tranquility that borders on the mystic." In 2009, she was awarded an inaugural Songlines Music Award for her album Wanderlust, an honour she shared with such luminaries as Amadou & Miriam, and Rokia Traore. Ms. Ahluwalia recently completed a 10-date European tour to rave reviews and in March 2009 she made her debut at the 2000-seat Symphony Hall in Chicago as the featured guest vocalist of renowned classical ensemble, the Chicago Sinfonietta. She was also part of a remarkable project called The Price of Silence, a video and iTunes single that was released in late 2008 in honour of the 60th anniversary of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It featured a who’s who of musical luminaries from around the world, including Columbia’s Atercepoladies (who wrote the song), Stephen Marley, Natalie Merchant, Hugh Masekela, Rachid Taha, Angelique Kidjo, and Natacha Atlas.   

With her new release, Aam Zameen: Common Ground, Ms. Ahluwalia has made a dramatic step forward in her ever evolving compositions. Known for her creative use of sounds from other musical traditions, she has merged her South Asian roots with genres as diverse as Fado and Celtic music. With Aam Zameen, she has taken her musical melding to a whole new level – collaborating with West African Tuareg musicians to create a brilliant new synthesis that is like nothing she has ever done before.

Whether it is collaborating with artists as diverse as Vijay Iyer and Tanya Tagak, or thrilling audiences from Paris to Prague to Mexico City, Ms. Ahluwalia is an artist who continues to grow, inspire, and create beauty. In 2011, she will do a world-wide tour in support of her new album.
