In Canada, more than nine million people live with diabetes or prediabetes, a condition that if left unchecked puts the person at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Members of high risk groups include Hispanic, South Asian, Asian or those of African descent. Left untreated or improperly managed, diabetes can result in a variety of serious complications including heart disease, blindness, kidney disease and nerve damage. However, research shows that following a healthy lifestyle can prevent type 2 diabetes and people with diabetes can live active, independent lives if they make a lifelong commitment to careful management of the disease.
The Canadian Diabetes Association is leading the fight against diabetes by helping people with diabetes live healthy lives while working to find a cure. The Association`s network of supporters help provide education and services to people living with diabetes, advocate for its cause, break ground towards a cure and translate research into practical applications.
