Commonwealth Games: Spotlight on Jasvir Singh
The 2010 Commonwealth Games will take place in India later this year and in an exclusive series, Mybindi.com profiles some potential members of the Canadian contingent. This week?s spotlight is on Jasvir Singh, Olympian and member of the Canadian Weightlifting National Team. He is in the process of completing his qualifying events for the 2010 Delhi Games.
Jasvir Singh took up weightlifting as a 16-year-old Grade 9 student in Karna, India. He came to Canada from Punjab in 2002 hoping for a brighter future and a better life; he is now a Canadian citizen. Singh was the first British Columbian weightlifter to qualify for the Olympic Games in 20 years and became the first Indo-Canadian weightlifter in history to represent Canada at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, where he placed 12th in the Men’s 62 kg category. The most memorable moment of his career to date was when he walked in the Opening Ceremony and competed in the Olympic Games.
Over the next few months, Singh will be focusing on training and staying healthy while going through the team selection process for the Commonwealth Games. As an athlete, he is proud to compete for Canada and enjoys sharing his sports career experience with youth. Singh’s motto is to be a good citizen of the country you are living in and that when you make a commitment, work hard at it.
“The Commonwealth Games will be a very exciting event for me. They are hosted in India, the country where I grew up and for whom I competed for many years. I will put in my best effort at the Commonwealth Games to make them a proud and historical moment in my life.”
The XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 in Delhi will be held from October 3-14.
ABOUT WEIGHTLIFTING*:
- Weightlifting has been an Olympic sport since the first modern Games in Athens in 1896.
- Weightlifting consists of two movements: the snatch, and the clean and jerk. The snatch is the quicker of the two lifts. Athletes take a wide grip on the bar, lifting it overhead in one motion. The clean-and-jerk is a two-stage lift, in which weightlifters can lift higher weights. The first part it the "clean," in which athletes get the weight to their shoulders. The second is the "jerk," in which athletes lift the weight overhead. If a lift is successful, athletes must add at least 2.5 kg for the next attempt. Lifters can attempt the same weight three times. Lifts in both movements are added together to determine the winner.
