Celebrate Diwali Night at the Sony Centre with BHARATI

The Sony Centre for the Performing Arts is pleased to announce this event in collaboration with MyBindi.com, for the opening night of BHARATI, the Wonder that is India, on Wednesday, October 26, 2011. The Sony Centre will transform into a Diwali Festival Marketplace for the first night of Diwali, putting its own theatrical stamp on the official Year of India in Canada.

The Diwali Festival Marketplace at the Sony Centre will feature vendors of exclusive apparel, jewelry, accessories and home décor, plus henna artists, photo booths and an array of South Asian snacks served up. Diwali, otherwise known as the Festival of Lights, is one of the most celebrated festivals in Indian culture worldwide. Marking the victory of good over evil, Diwali is symbolized by illuminating houses, pathways, avenues and boulevards with diyas and candles. All a part of its commitment to diverse programming and as a testimonial to Toronto's multi-cultural spirit, the Sony Centre's Diwali Festival Marketplace opens at 6:00pm and is coupled with a special Diwali promotion for all opening night tickets priced at $45 when quoting the code CELEBRATION.

The evening will commence with the ceremonial lighting of diyas prior to the show in the lobby of the theatre. The ceremony will be followed by dance performances showcasing everything from Classical to Bollywood to Punjabi Bhangra dance.

"As a cultural presenter in Toronto, the Sony Centre continues to bring the world to your stage. Toronto's vibrant Indo-Canadian community plays a vital role in our cultural landscape and BHARATI has the ability to showcase the richness of India's culture and values," states Dan Brambilla, CEO, Sony Centre For The Performing Arts. "It is with great honour that the this production has been recognized as a cultural event by our Consul-General of India, Preeti Saran, as a part of Canada's Year of India commemorations."

After touring the world for six years, the critically acclaimed BHARATI, boasting a company of 70 dancers, actors, singers, acrobats, and musicians in a powerful story of love and homecoming, finally makes it way to Toronto, where more than 300,000 South Asians reside. BHARATI features a flow of original background music, and 19 of the greatest hit songs of Indian cinema, all played and sung live. Each musical scene represents a regional Indian tradition - through the choice of rhythms, instruments, vocal arrangements, melodies, choreography, costumes, and video images, a unique cultural portrait is created. BHARATI features international Indian stars Rahul Vohra, as the narrator, and Bhavna Pani as the title character, Bharati.

"BMO has a long history of supporting multi-cultural communities in Canada and this sponsorship is another demonstration of our ongoing commitment," said Su McVey, Vice President, Customer Communications & Marketing at BMO Bank of Montreal. "As the presenting sponsor of BHARATI, we're delighted to help bring this celebration of India's splendid heritage to life for Canadian audiences."

BHARATI, the Wonder that is India, runs from October 26 - November 6, 2011 at the Sony Centre For The Performing Arts.
