CBC/RCI Embracing Canada Screening, Nov. 27
CBC and Radio Canada International (RCI) teamed up for an outreach event at SFU Surrey, jointly hosting a special screening and panel presentation on immigration and South Asian life in B.C., hosted by CBC Radio's Meera Bains. The audience watched several episodes of the RCI web-series Embracing Canada, which follows Anshu Bhatia Singh and her family's migration from Mumbai to Surrey.
This was followed by a half-hour 1958 documentary from CBC Television's Here and There. In attendance were Anshu Bhatia Singh and her daughter Priyanka, and 71-year-old Darshan Singh Gill, who starred in the Here and There documentary when he was 19 and newly arrived to Victoria. A spirited discussion was held afterwards with panelists Sanjeev Nand and Mary Tanielian from DiverseCity Resource Centre, Suki Grewal from South Asian Family Association, Nick Noorani from Canadian Immigrant Magazine and Saima Naz from Higher Grade Learning Centre. Several members of the audience also contributed to the thoughtful discussion, asking pertinent questions and sharing their own stories of immigration to Canada.
