Although Cricket has been played in this great nation for well over a century, it is unfortunate that a vast number of cricketers have been deprived of continuing the sport due to the incredible lack of opportunities and Cricket facilities in Canada. This has seriously effected many of the Cricket enthusiasts especially, those who have arrived in Canada from South Asia & the Caribbean. Sadly many cricketers have had to give up cricket and reluctantly take up alternative sports such as Baseball, Basketball to keep fit. We hope to narrow this gap through the introduction of this exciting tournament, “which has already caused great excitement among cricket lovers”, as indicated by Sana Saravanamuthu, the Secretary of the Canada Cup T20.
The organizers enjoy a tremendous track record on achieving the impossible, especially after their intervention in getting the professional help that the Canadian National Cricket Team needed in 2008. Sri Lanka Cricket Board, under the guidance of veteran Cricketer and World cup winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga was flown into Canada by the organizers. Hon.Arjuna Ranatunga M.P. was the first to support the growing Canadian interest which gave a tremendous boost to the Canadian National Coach Mr. Pubudu Dassanayake and his pool of cricket players. This important milestone paved the way for Canadian Cricketers to visit Colombo, Sri Lanka for special training programs, which ultimately helped the Canadians to qualify for the World Cup 2011.
