Calgary Celebrating India Fest 2010

India Fest is Calgary?s only free outdoor South Asian festival. The event aims to celebrate South Asian culture, to promote multicultural respect and understanding, and to provide a platform for South Asian performing artists.

India Fest is Calgary’s only free outdoor South Asian festival. The event aims to celebrate South Asian culture, to promote multicultural respect and understanding, and to provide a platform for South Asian performing artists.
 
Recording artist Prita Chhabra will headline this year’s India Fest. Prita, who was recently nominated for a 2010 Toronto Independent Music Award, will be arriving in Calgary between a busy summer touring schedule which has included stops in Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, and Orlando. Her signature style combines R&B, pop, and South Asian influences to create a sound which is completely her own.
Other highlights of India Fest 2010 include:

·    Delicious sweet and savoury cuisine from restaurants around Calgary
·    “Passport to Bollywood” photo booth
·    Bazaar stalls selling shawls, clothes, and jewellery
·    Traditional henna tattoo applications
·    Traditional and modern Indian dance performances
·    Bollywood dance demonstrations
·    Classical and contemporary music performances
·    “Fashion and Fusion” fashion show
·    Palm reading
·    Saree (Indian traditional costume) demonstrations
·    “Bindi Booth” with free South Asian forehead decorations

A portion of India Fest 2010 proceeds will be donated to the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter to support its mission to stop family violence in the Calgary community.
