Balwinder Safri
On January 23, 2010 UK Bhangra star Balwinder Safri, of the Safri Boyz, will be in town to perform for the first time in over 10 years. Hosted by local ethnic event producer Virsar Media and taking place at Envy Nightclub in Surrey, BC., the evening will also showcase local talent to the audience.
Safri is best known for songs such as “Nakhre Bin Soni Teemi”, “Rahe Rahe Jaan Waliye” and “Chand Mera Makna”. He spent much of the 90’s becoming a household name as a member of the group the Safri Boyz, prior to which he had been a part of Bhangra bands Geet Sangeet and Ashoka. He also went on to release solo albums. With over 14 albums to his credit that include everything from dance hits to romantic melodies, Safri is sure to have a song that everyone can enjoy.
Backing Safri will be Vancouver based band En Karma. This group spent most of 2009 touring across North America, are currently nominated for Best International Act in the UK Asian Music Awards and are also taking part in Quantum Bhangra through the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad this February. Watch for their debut album release this spring. Sukhraj of New York’s Azad Records, will also be hitting the stage to promote his upcoming second album whose first single “Hullare” is already being played on the airwaves in India. And singer Raju Johal will be making his debut performance under his new management team, Inject Media. Raju has built a name for himself locally a powerful singer, and has already been asked many times to perform by family, friends, local charities and large scale events including playing dhol with the UK’s H-Dhami on his last Vancouver visit, which led to Dhami passing Johal the mic for an impromptu set.
Tickets for the event will be available January 6th and are only $25 for general admission and $50 for VIP. They can be purchased from Kamal’s Video Palace in Surrey and Main Video in Vancouver, or at the Perfect Look Boutique in Surrey. There will be a limited number of tickets available at the door for $35.
