2nd Annual Mayor's Cricket Festival was a Success in Ajax!

The 2nd Ajax Mayor’s Cricket Festival hosted by Corporate Canada Cricket Club and the presenting partner, CIBC, was successfully held on Sat, July 28th 2012 with three adult teams of Ajax Cricket Club, Asapient-Thunderbolts and CIBC and U13 teams of Durham Cricket Academy who showcased their cricketing abilities. Asapient-Thunderbolts led by Riaz Raihan stood as the winner and Ajax Cricket Club as the runner-up of the esteemed Ajax Mayor’s Cricket Festival.

Honorable Mayor Steve Parish along with Councillor Renrick Ashby from the town of Ajax, were in attendance at 12 noon to formally inaugurate and initiate the proceedings and officially open the festival. Mayor Parish, commended the great work being done by Corporate Canada Cricket Club for the second consecutive year and the great support extended by the event sponsor, CIBC, towards bringing such prominent events to the local community.

The Mayor while addressing the gathering hinted at creating and increasing the facility and playing area for cricket around North Ajax looking at the increased levels of interest in the local community especially among the junior / grass roots level. Community charity partners – the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and the Heart and Stroke Foundation – were also in attendance and set up their stalls to raise the awareness around leading an active lifestyle by participating in such sporting events and activities. Poonam from CBCF and Jasjit from H&SF also addressed the teams and spectators about their programs and services in the Durham Region. Phil Navaratne, Head Coach, Durham Cricket Academy also shared his views on the development of junior cricket in the Durham Region. On behalf of CIBC, Darrell and Helen presented a cheque of $250/- each to both Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and the Heart and Stoke foundation. Families also enjoyed free face painting and free Mehndi / Henna that was organized at the event and a scrumptious lunch menu including Tandoori Roti that was cooked live right at the venue.

This event was proudly sponsored by MyBindi.com.

The key highlights of the event were some amazing cricket on display. The event commenced with a game between CIBC Cricket team and Ajax Cricket Club and was won by Ajax Cricket Club. There was a children’s / youth game subsequent to this followed by an exciting playoff between Ajax cricket club and Asapient-Thunderbolts team with the former team chasing down a huge score of 116 runs set by the latter team. There were some amazing display of stroke play from both teams and trading blows and blasting away sixes and fours all across the ground while there was exciting and roaring Bollywood style music being played in the background by the DJ matching every bit of the action happening in the middle.

Both teams Ajax Cricket Club and Asapient-Thunderbolts progressed to the finals of the event on the back of their amazing overall performances. The first half of the finals of this tournament showcased some awe inspiring and swashbuckling knock off the blade of Asapient-Thunderbolts opening batsman – Sarab, who went on to score the fastest 50 by any batsman in this format. He barely needed 9 deliveries to score a half century and piled up 76 runs by the time he was dismissed by Ajax CC. Earlier, Asapient-Thunderbolts team won the toss for the third time in a row and chose to bat first. The final score tally for Asapient-Thunderbolts was 133 runs which was also the highest in the tournament and the Ajax CC were never given any opportunity to recover or to come anywhere closer to the chase after losing some early wickets, owing to some tight bowling and fielding on display by Asapient-Thunderbolts team, who eventually came out victorious and collected the winning cup of the 2nd annual Ajax Mayor’s cricket festival.

The festival culminated with the giving away of awards by the guest of honor, MPP of Ajax-Pickering, Joe Dickson, who joined the proceedings in the latter half of the day to felicitate and address the participants and the gathering to preside over the awards ceremony and officially close off the event. The honorable MPP – Joe, commended the efforts of Corporate Canada Cricket Club while also appreciating the presenting sponsor CIBC, Darrell Dietz, for their continued association and support with C4 to bring such great events to the local community.

C4 looks forward to bringing back the festival to the town of Ajax in the summer of 2013 and continue to contribute towards the growth of this sport and the camaraderie in the local community.
